OFF THE BEATEN

Pop-Up Art Gallery
Monument, CO

Here at KAT+MUSE, I am always searching for new sources of inspiration.  And sometimes if you're lucky, these moments will make their way to you when you least expect it.  Enter this charming little outdoor gallery I found myself in the other day.  Sure, some say that this is a "sewage drain", but I beg to differ.  Inside you will find lovely paintings, to die for texture, an excellent use of light and shadow---and even a sculpture garden.  Spend a little more time, and you'll find an ironic, Warhol-esque tree stump and lovely views framed by the natural surroundings.

GONE COUNTRY

Beetlebung Farm :: Gabriela Herman

Well, as country as Martha's Vineyard can be.  Today, with the help of photographer Gabriela Herman, we're on our way to a special place called Bettlebung Farm.  Head Chef and partner Chris Fischer specializes in farm to table grub--everything you eat here has either been picked or caught that day. Cooking, like all great design, is a combination of colors and textures, with the added bonus of taste.  Like great designers, great chefs compose each meal with a meticulous eye and attention to detail and composition, something that is evident in these beautiful images.  So, today, let's enjoy a little taste...

CLYFFORD STILL MUSEUM

Clyfford Still Museum :: Allied Works Architecture
Denver, CO

This project by Allied Works Architecture is especially close to my heart for a number of reasons.  First, Clyfford Still is one of my favorite painters!  The museum is also in Denver, my home town, so you could say that I'm a little partial.  But that aside, the architecture of the space is truly breathtaking in conjunction with the paintings.  Allied Works Architecture has created such a relaxing space that people have even been known to be found meditating within the museum walls.  Could you blame them though?  Natural light pours into the entire space through a custom concrete ceiling, that is, can you believe it---ONE piece! And that's just the beginning...

The custom walls that are found in most of the museum are meant to mimick the texture and depth that Still's paintings are so well known for.

The rhythm and repetition of the singular vertical element continues out to the multiple outdoor courtyards which overlook the Denver skyline.  These babies are the perfect breath of fresh air(literally) as you make your way through the gallery.

THINGS TO REMEMBER

If you are even slightly passionate about design, you know this is most certainly true--design is something that lives in your soul.  It's not something you turn on or off.  Its about realizing potential in even the most unexpected circumstances.  Its about being aware of your surroundings, but also celebrating the unpredictable, knowing when to focus and when to take a step back without forgetting that you have the power to make each day more beautiful than the last.

These are snap shots of the interior of my metal travel mug after the sun had its way with the last few drops of coffee. I'm one mug down, but I'd say the texture in these images was worth it. Celebrate design whenever you can!

FLOYD GREY

Today I'm enjoying the captivating illustrations by Malaysian based artist Floyd Grey.  The control he possesses over the stroke and pressure of his hand is especially impression, easily moving from a delicate, single stroke to a highly saturated focal point.  Such simple lines, but done to perfection!
