Il Lee :: Ballpoint Drawings
I like ballpoint pens. In fact, I think you could even say I prefer ballpoint over fountain, which is not something you hear a lot. At the beginning stages of my designs, my sketch books looks like a ballpoint massacre, with some forms drawn over and over...oh ya, and over.! Things are crossed out and circled, but never once have these "masterpieces" come out looking like this. Il Lee has taken the medium of ballpoints to the next level with his large scale pen drawings. With some of his pieces up to 50 ft wide and requiring over 500 pens on canvas or paper, Il Lee works sections by section, showing striking confidence with every stroke. Benjamin Genocchio of the New York Times describes his works as, "sweeping, rhythmical abstractions(s) in blue recalling the Italian Futurist paintings of Giacomo Balla, combined with elements of traditional Asian ink and wash painting".
