Gerco de Ruijter :: Photographic Works

In the world of Instagram and SnapChat, rarely do images stop me dead in my tracks like the work of photographer Gerco de Ruijter. Primarily landscapes, his portfolio speaks through almost a godly sense of scale, capturing moments from either incredible distances or microscopic details. I find myself reaching almost a meditative state as I try to figure out angles, textures and subject matter through the eyes of such a wonderful artist. Below are snaps taken from his Iceland, Almost Nature and Lot collections as seen on his site.

FRISKY BUSINESS

Aimei Ozaki

Juxtaposition, soft and spiky.

There's something lovely about the playful mischief behind these paintings by Aimei Ozaki. The chilly little nips(ok, fine they're cactus) entice you to come closer...but watch out, cause they might getcha! It just seems like they're up to no good. The tension created between sensuality and play is something that I absolutely CANNOT get enough of!

HADLEY WILLIAMS - ABSTRACTION

Hadley Williams :: Material Explorations + Abstract Art
Mixed Media

California based artist Hadley Williams creates these playful 3-Dimensional pieces of art from every day objects like bubble wrap, paint, recycled plastic, plaster and even the foam from coat hangers. Ranging from whimsical to more graphic and always with a concentration on the objects' textures, Williams encourages us to re-think what we know of everyday objects in a new, more playful, and inspiring way.

2 WAYS : BLACK AND WHITE

2 Ways :: Black + White Photography

Stunning photographic explorations by We Are Not You (first) and Alexander Khokholov (second). The first image manipulations were intended to capture and communicate the illusion of motion, while the stunning black and white portraits by Khokholov stop you dead in your tracks.

MICHAEL CINA

Michael Cina/Michael Cina Associates

After beginning his own design studio, Michael Cina Associates, and focusing primarily on graphics for years(you know him for the Nike swoosh, HP logo, facebook logo, etc etc.) Michael Cina is rediscovering his passion for painting, and I know I'm not the only one who's excited about this. His paintings carry the same sense of refinement and care as his graphics but with a more freely artistic quality mixing acrylic, oil, pigments, and minerals among other media. These are only a few of his many new pieces. Check out the rest of his fine arts portfolio here.

THE ART OF LIVING

The Tenderloin Project :: Sean Desmond

Capturing one of the poorest, roughest neighborhoods of San Francisco, talented photographer Sean Desmond set out to find beauty in the most unexpected place, give a sense of identity to the residents we often avoid eye contact with, and humanize even some of the most unbearable surroundings. These beautiful and touching images represent only few of the many wonderful moments captured by Desmond's lens in the inner-city Tenderloin neighborhood.

DYNAMIC OIL ON CANVAS

I Wayan Sudarsana Yansen

I recently stumbled upon this very talented Indonesian artist and immediately fell in love with his graceful finesse and technique. These oil on canvas paintings are evocative and enticing with a certain dynamism that keeps you engaged long enough to discover and rediscover the complexities and layering behind his work. Although most are smaller in size, I am salivating over the large scale graphic impact and potential these paintings have. Enjoy!

DIVINE DOWN UNDER RESIDENCE

StudioFour :: Ridge Road Residence
Mornington Peninsula, Australia

Ridge Road Residence by StudioFour exudes simplicity and elegance in materiality as the form gracefully mimics the topography of the surround. The architects description of the project is at the end of the post(I really don't think I could have said it any better!). But for now, enjoy the view...

"A simple brief and programming requirements, teamed with a dramatic site characterized by a steep slope and a single tea tree, enabled the design to become an exploration into enclosing the basic rituals of domestic life within restrained building forms…the form of the building becomes driven by the clients desire to separate the public and private zones of the residence.
In stark contrast to the surrounding houses, which attempt to cancel out the sloping topography by creating a podium level at which the outdoor areas sit exposed high above ground level, our design for this house adopts a gentler strategy, with the building form spilling down the slope to terminate in a series of terraced decks.
These low lying decks aim to provide privacy from the golf course below, whilst the surrounding native landscape will shelter the outdoor areas from the harsh prevailing winds.
Varying levels of interaction and connection with the landscape, both real and perceived, drive all aspects of the design, from the channeled views of the horizon upon entry, through to the double height picture window that captures the full proportion of the tea tree, and the direct and intimate connection provided by the low level decks."
