Repetition.

Photojournalist Michael Wolf is the pure definition of international artist. Wolf was born in Germany, then raised in Canada and the United States before working a decade in China under the magazine Stern. His work most often takes a voyeuristic stance, removing context of location, therefore, allowing the observer to focus on patterns or subjects that might otherwise go unnoticed. In these photographs, part of a larger series titled, Architecture of Density, Wolf displays Hong Kong as vacant and deserted--very atypical of most assumptions of this city. The sheer density of the structure is breathtaking, and reminds us of how very different other cultures live, breathe and get through the day.

The Tutu Project :: Bob Carey

Good morning, hello Monday, and happy new week! As many of you are aware, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so a few things are looking different around here. I've got my pink dress on and there's a man in a tutu?! Bob Carey began the Tutu Project in 2003 shortly after his wife had been diagnosed with breast cancer. The project consists of Bob running around the country taking pictures in his fabulous pink tutu. Prints of Bob can be purchased individually or as a compilation in his book Ballerina. All net proceeds go to fund the research of breast cancer.

Aurland Lookout :: Saunders Architecture
Aurland, Norway

Well, leave it to the Nords to transform something as simple as a scenic overlook into a breathtaking architectural intervention. Remaining true to traditional Nordic design, the Aurland Lookout by Saunders Architecture utilizes natural and locally sourced materials that celebrate the surrounding landscape. What I find most impressive is the architect's non-competitive collaboration with the awe inspiring location. Neither landscape or architecture is trying to be the other, rather they act as harmonious compliments that ultimately merge to create an even more impressive and memorable experience. Architecture at its finest.  Happy Monday :)

CASA KIMBALL BY RANGR STUDIO

It's not often that I have nothing to say, especially when it comes to architecture, interiors, design, art, graphics, photography...you get the point.  But today, I'll let the images speak for themselves (well mostly!).  Casa Kimball by Rangr Studio is a vacation paradise on the beautiful shore of the Dominican Republic.  With eight suites, multiple pools, breathtaking views, and a one of a kind facade design, not to mention loads and loads of glazing... this is a perfect place to clear your mind for a busy week ahead!  Deep breathes today...stay inspired!

OAB PROMENADE

Benidorm West Beach Promenade :: Office of Architecture (OAB)
Barcelona, Spain

 

The Benidorm West Beach Promenade, conceived by OAB in Barcelona has got to be one of the happiest civic interventions that I've seen in quite some time. The singular building material, white concrete, is complemented with honeycomb shaped finish tiles in various colors and textures designed to catch the light in a unique way, and give the promenade "a lifestyle of its own" (in OAB's words).  Although the promenade's primary goals were to protect built up areas from sea breaks and organize traffic flow, OAB has managed to achieve this and much more while retaining a sense of playfulness suitable for this seaside location.

OKHA INTERIORS

Nettleton 199 :: OKHA Interiors
Clifton, Capetown

With the goal of maintaining the connection to not only the sea, but the mountains, OKHA Interiors has created a dynamic environment within Nettleton 199.  Volumetric and open spaces give this residence a sense of grandeur, while the soft interior finishes and palette work nicely with the large expanses of glass to convey an overall welcoming and settled interior space. I think I could deal with this view for a bit...

Designed by owners/friends in conjunction with Brazilian based architectural firm, Vida de Vila, Casa Lola is the perfect balance of simplicity, elegance and serenity.  The primary materials of wood, glass, and cement allow the home to lead a casual existence while celebrating the beautiful tranquility of its surroundings. With much of the furniture from the owners' world travels as well as contributions from local craftsmen, Casa Lola embodies a certain Bohemian quality perfect for a relaxing retreat.
