TOMAS SERACENO
Tomas Saraceno
Today, I'd like to share with you the very interesting work of architect/artist Tomas Saraceno. Saraceno received his formal training in architecture in Buenos Aires and now practices his experimental designs in Frankfurt. His work has an underlying biophilic tone while referencing his interests in utopian theories and astronomy. He often consults scientists and astrophysicists for his work which is conveyed in the intricacy and detail only achievable through meticulous attention to the universe's naturally occurring systems and connections.

CELL PHONE DISCO
Cell Phone Disco :: Ursual Laveren
Cell phone disco by architect Ursula Laveren in Dublin is an interactive installation that translates the radio waves of an active cell phone into a different kind of wave-- those in the field of visible light. If the individual is in proximity of the installation while receiving a phone call or a text message, thousands of lights are activated to mimic the users activity. Cell phone disco is a creative way of rewarding people for interacting with each other while humanizing technology. I love the potential of this type of project and creative implementation of technology in concert with an object we all use everyday.

SERIOUSLY COOL AH MA-GAH I WANT IT
Silvan Oesterle :: The Sequential Wall
Currently obsessed with repetition...can you tell? Another cool thing about this installation in Germany is that it was not only designed by students, but it was fabricated by a robot. Deemed Performance Driven Robotic Timber Construction, "The Sequential Wall investigates the architectonic and constructive potential of additive digital fabrication in timber construction". Able moved, pivoted, and manipulated to create different forms, this installation is a celebration of the incredible potential held in just a single piece of wood(or any material really) that is multiplied in a specific and strategic way. Very cool.

MILKY WAVE
Milky Wave :: Aidia Architectural Studio
Milky Wave is a part of a larger project by Aidia Architectural Studio where they attempt to "re-puzzle the urban scale through the re-presentation of its smaller components". This installation, comprised of thousands of recycled glass yogurt jars native to the city of Beijing, is a wonderful example of re-use in the most unexpected and beautiful way. (Originally for Beijing Design Week)

STICK IT TO ME :)
Yo Shimada :: Sticky Note Installation
This installation by Yo Shimada of Tato Architects is just simply too much fun! Composed of over 30,000 sticky notes formed into cell-like structures then stacked, the vibrant colors create a playful mini metropolis. Guests of the gallery were invited to post their own thoughts about the installation on the walls surrounding the piece, creating a fun way of interacting with the art and each other.

NENDO
Today I thought we would hang out with Tokyo based design firm, NENDO. Founded by designer Oki Sato, NENDO often utilizes repetitive elements to transform normal spaces into awe-evoking experiences. NENDO frequently references Sato's architectural training to create dramatic transformations of space with light, texture, and form often with a hint of whimpsy.

JACOB HASHIMOTO - KITES
Jacob Hashimoto :: Installations
Jacob Hashimoto's background in painting and print-making is quite evident in his intricate large scale installations. The use of layering and repetition are essential in the creation of his massive works of art and unique spatial interventions. The story behind these "kite works" is also quite interesting as they were an attempt by Hashimoto to work past a personal block and lack of inspiration. By tirelessly creating the same object over and over again, Hashimoto realized that what he had been searching for was right at this finger tips. The resulting larger-than-life installations have taken on a life of their own and now range from soft and playful to more graphic and bold.
