JORGE AYALA : POST-DIGITAL CURIOUSITIES

[Ay]A Studio :: Jorge Ayala

Material Exploration

[Ay]A Studio is a "global design laboratory" based in Paris and founded by Architect and innovator Jorge Ayala. As a student of architecture, Mexico City born Jorge Ayala explores the implications of digital technology through a variety of disciplines. Featured below, the couture pieces of Jorge Ayala Clothing Design, expose his roots in architectural drawings, digital fabrication and a fascination of material explorations--all of these right down my alley! A refreshingly risky design sense and method of representation let us know he is not afraid to be in a class all his own! Surely, Jorge Ayala is a name to keep track of in the world of experimental fashion and couture.

ARCHITECTURE OF DENSITY

Michael Wolf :: Photojournalism
Architecture of Density, Hong Kong

Repetition.

Photojournalist Michael Wolf is the pure definition of international artist. Wolf was born in Germany, then raised in Canada and the United States before working a decade in China under the magazine Stern. His work most often takes a voyeuristic stance, removing context of location, therefore, allowing the observer to focus on patterns or subjects that might otherwise go unnoticed. In these photographs, part of a larger series titled, Architecture of Density, Wolf displays Hong Kong as vacant and deserted--very atypical of most assumptions of this city. The sheer density of the structure is breathtaking, and reminds us of how very different other cultures live, breathe and get through the day.

CONNECT PEOPLE NOT THINGS

FLUIDEZ
Out of Site :: Mission Cultural Center

Last year, I had the wonderful opportunity to design and build this structure in conjunction with SF based non-profit, Out-of-Site, who provides art and design education free of charge to high schoolers whose schools' funding have been cut. I worked along side an amazing team of students from California College of the Arts to come up with this beauty...

FLUIDEZ responds to designing a float for the 2012 San Francisco Carnaval Parade. The annual theme, "Crossing Borders, Bridging Cultures" combined with local cultural celebrations such as the Year of the Water Dragon provided the departure point for the initial design iterations. The formal articulation was conceived intuitively through a series of physical and 3-dimensional models, and was carefully refined in response to structural considerations and dimensional constraints. The resulting exoskeleton merges a free form with a geometric grid, creating a sense of tension and playful drama, embodying the culture of Carnaval. The desire for homogeneous materiality surfaced early in the design process as a way of evoking a sense of continuity and movement that would support the structure's dual purpose--a kinetic sculpture moving through the city on parade and as an installation piece designed to spatialize a gallery, creating both interior and exterior environments. Through a series of experimental material explorations, birch plywood was selected as the primary material. The final design is a culmination of intuitive design formed by structural considerations and refined by qualities inherent to the chosen materiality and the process of making.

In order to keep all my readers up to date with what I'm doing in the world of design, I will be featuring much more of my own work, material explorations, and all the ridiculous things I've been up to. I have so many fun projects in the works, both solo and with this chica, so please stay tuned for lots of goodies from here on out.

RESTAURANT ANDRE

Restaurant André :: Singapore

Cooking. Art. Love.

These are the primary ingredients in the experiential design and execution behind Restaurant André in Singapore. What most impressed me about Restaurant André was the obvious passion behind every aspect of the restaurant, from design, to cuisine, to the graphic style of the website. Its clear that no detail was left unaccounted for. There is a sense of respect and esteem for every sense and every aspect of design.

Here's a couple snaps from the website. The Chef is truly an artist...

Casual elegance seems to embrace what the goal of the dining experience, "Cuisine is sophisticated and filled with emotion, elegant and simple, always generous, 100% from the heart."[via]

The presentation of the food and the table is not lacking either. Careful attention is once again paid to all aspects...including custom tables and place settings, and artistic dishes which act as the vibrant pops of color that the space might otherwise lack.

KOLLISION

Kollision :: Interactive Installation

Kollision is a Danish design studio located in Aurhas, Denmark. Founded in 2000, this relatively new firm has already made quite a name for themselves, especially in the realm of interactive lighting installation. Many of us became familiar with Kollision through their collaboration with BIG and Audi for Design Miami 2011 where their interactive LED floor simulated the movements of drivers and pedestrians alike. But their portfolio has oh so many more goodies to dive into! Here's a few projects by them that I found especially interesting, but do take some time to have a look yourself! Very cool stuff to be seen....and do me a favor and watch the videos! Photos just don't do it justice.

SAXO Bank Interactive Ceiling
I posted about the exterior of this building and ridiculous spiral staircase on the interior, and this interactive ceiling was a special request from the architect. I have decided that this MUST be the coolest bank in the world. Or at least have the coolest clients where they feel like they can get away with things like this. And bonus! The lights can be controlled from your iPhone with a special downloadable app!

Spine Installation
One of Kollision's most recent installation--Music and lighting is activated by the presence of the occupants. Creepy but cool!

GOING BOLD

Ozone :: Wonderwall
Hong Kong

Never lacking bold gestures, Wonderwall has done it once again with this completely over-the-top interior of the Ozone Restaurant in the Hong Kong Ritz-Carlton. Occupying the top 15 floors of a 118-story building, this hotel boasts the highest in the world! The design of Ozone, according the Wonderwall was to "create a place that is full of surprises and excitement at every turn, whether one enters from the bar, the bar lounge, the lobby lounge, dining room, or tapas bar"[via]. Well, I think its safe to say mission accomplished. The repetition of geometry travels from surface to surface giving the sense that the space is eternal. This feeling is echoed in the materiality to create an overall, out of this world creation. Wow. Just wow.
