GOING GRAPHIC!

Greg Kadel Studios

Today I'm featuring the work of the very talented Greg Kadel! His portfolio is full of editorial, fashion, and art photography(all amazing!), but this shoot in particular caught my eye. Layers, fishnet, pops of color and a unique graphic sensibility...what more could a girl ask for?!

Irresistable Schematics

StudioFour :: Process/Schematic Diagrams

A couple days ago, on the post Divine Down Under Residence, I featured an Australian home designed by the firm StudioFour. Well,  today we are all in for a treat! In addition to beautifully designed and constructed buildings, StudioFour has an incredible talent for the schematic phase of design.  These diagrams represent initial iterations and form/concept development from a handful of their projects. In addition to being beautiful works of art, these pieces are a window into the genius minds behind each of their built forms. For my fellow arch-geeks out there, their portfolio will prove to be a serious treat!

THINGS TO REMEMBER

Often times in design, we are preoccupied with the conventions of what we are trying to create, what we are attempting to improve, or how we are different. Words such as form, light, materiality and texture infiltrate our vocabulary, and although these are all important things that I absolutely love, we sometimes lose sight of the overall goal. Design is ultimately about people. Last night I found myself surrounded by an incredible myriad of talented architects, artists, and designers. They spoke of their projects and processes for design. But what was most impressed upon me, was the ability of architecture and design to bring people together.  Design brings people together who would have likely never met and gives them a common language. The process of design is inherently collaborative, because no good design is ever created without someone else in mind.

DIVINE DOWN UNDER RESIDENCE

StudioFour :: Ridge Road Residence
Mornington Peninsula, Australia

Ridge Road Residence by StudioFour exudes simplicity and elegance in materiality as the form gracefully mimics the topography of the surround. The architects description of the project is at the end of the post(I really don't think I could have said it any better!). But for now, enjoy the view...

"A simple brief and programming requirements, teamed with a dramatic site characterized by a steep slope and a single tea tree, enabled the design to become an exploration into enclosing the basic rituals of domestic life within restrained building forms…the form of the building becomes driven by the clients desire to separate the public and private zones of the residence.
In stark contrast to the surrounding houses, which attempt to cancel out the sloping topography by creating a podium level at which the outdoor areas sit exposed high above ground level, our design for this house adopts a gentler strategy, with the building form spilling down the slope to terminate in a series of terraced decks.
These low lying decks aim to provide privacy from the golf course below, whilst the surrounding native landscape will shelter the outdoor areas from the harsh prevailing winds.
Varying levels of interaction and connection with the landscape, both real and perceived, drive all aspects of the design, from the channeled views of the horizon upon entry, through to the double height picture window that captures the full proportion of the tea tree, and the direct and intimate connection provided by the low level decks." STICK IT TO ME :)

Yo Shimada :: Sticky Note Installation

This installation by Yo Shimada of Tato Architects is just simply too much fun! Composed of over 30,000 sticky notes formed into cell-like structures then stacked, the vibrant colors create a playful mini metropolis.  Guests of the gallery were invited to post their own thoughts about the installation on the walls surrounding the piece, creating a fun way of interacting with the art and each other.

A VIEW

Aurland Lookout :: Saunders Architecture
Aurland, Norway

Well, leave it to the Nords to transform something as simple as a scenic overlook into a breathtaking architectural intervention. Remaining true to traditional Nordic design, the Aurland Lookout by Saunders Architecture utilizes natural and locally sourced materials that celebrate the surrounding landscape. What I find most impressive is the architect's non-competitive collaboration with the awe inspiring location. Neither landscape or architecture is trying to be the other, rather they act as harmonious compliments that ultimately merge to create an even more impressive and memorable experience. Architecture at its finest.  Happy Monday :)

FACE OF FASHION

Fashion Portraiture :: Anja Van Herle and Jessica Rae Sommer

Ladies, ladies, ladies...you two should really get together! So this is my message to you:
I found myself falling in love with two LA based painters/artist today-- both with insane talent and control of their medium with a love for fashion and the expressions of the female face. Their works are a combination of attitude, seduction and layering...and often a little humor, and I just can't get enough of their portfolios. Anja Van Herle (first 3)  blends high fashion with story-telling. Her portraits always seem a little mischievous, but definitely the type of girlfriend you want on your side! And Jessica Rae Sommer's depiction of emotion through posture, materiality, and especially her subjects eyes is pretty incredible. Jessica uses a variety of media...and bonus---she's trained in interior design!  Both are rock stars in my book, so please enjoy!

PORSCHE PAVILION BY HENN ARCHITEKTEN

Porsche Pavilion :: HENN Architekten

Located in Wolfsburg, Germany as a part of the Volkswagen themed park, the Porsche Pavillion's sexy curves are characteristically evocative of movement.  HENN Architekten captures the  sophistication of the Porsche brand in both the materiality and the form.  The luxurious white concrete peels away from the ground plane to create stairs and seating areas as well as an insane cantilever which offers shelter.
